Building on the incredible success of Volume 1 this breathtaking book takes us on a journey through knitting pattern history from 1930 to 1959. This substantial treasury contains 80 stunning, classic patterns for women, carefully chosen to offer the knitter the best of design from each period, alongside a thoughtfully balanced selection of projects; from beginner to advanced; cardigans to sweaters; dresses to hats; stocking stitch to cable and from Fair Isle to lace. With the patterns chronologically arranged the book also acts as a historical insight into this golden age of knitwear design. Both the original and a re-written, updated and multi-sized adaption of each pattern is included, with beautiful full colour images, authentically styled and photographed. Additional information explaining vintage fit and finishing techniques complete this inspiring publication. This truly amazing book is for all knitters, young and old, and of all abilities. It affords the opportunity not just to knit, but to knit a piece of the past and create an heirloom of the future.

A Stitch in Time Vintage Knitting Patterns 19301959 v 2 Susan Crawford Jane Waller 9780955620652 Books

I have to admit, I was hesitant to spend the money on this book since I hadn't had a chance to look at it and it is admittedly pricey. However, I'd heard good things about it and I was more than blown away when I received it. This hefty volume is perfect for knitters looking to create vintage reproduction knitwear. I own a few old knitting patterns/leaflets - and I'm a fairly decent knitter - but the work involved in translating a vintage pattern has been thus far more than I have the time and patience for.

The mountain of work that no doubt went into this book is amazing. There are 80 patterns and, while many of them are truly representative of their era, they are almost all timeless and perfect for modern wear. Images of the original patterns as well as the modern translations are included, along with lovely vintage-styled photos of the updated versions. Comparison of the photos and original images shows that very little changes were made so I imagine these patterns could be used with accuracy to create costumes for theater productions, etc. The book also includes UK as well as US such as measurements and needle sizes which is a very nice detail.

I often find myself buying knitting books and liking only a handful of the patterns; this is probably the only knitting book I have purchased where a vast majority of the patterns appeal to me. A wise investment, indeed! I would urge serious knitters to add this book to their library, along with A Stitch in Time: v. 1: Vintage Knitting & Crochet Patterns 1920-1949.

A Stitch in Time Vintage Knitting Patterns 19301959 v 2 Susan Crawford Jane Waller 9780955620652 Books Reviews

Have you ever noticed that fashion is a cycle? What was popular in the 60's came around in 2010? So I've been waiting and now here it is.... My favorite era of fashion was the 1940's to 50's when women's clothes were fitted on top and round on the bottom and used pretty flowered fabrics. I had plenty of these from my mother as I grew up and enjoyed wearing them but alas, they have all shrunk in my closet,,, size eating moths. So this book fills a real need in that I can now make replacement garments which are so much more flattering than the drop shoulder tents out of rope sized wool. Yes you can make those in a few hours but will you ever wear it other than when the power goes out and it's 40 below? These garments will take time... but they will fit and will not add an extra 3-20 inches of girth. The book has the originals and updates so you should be able replicate your favorite vintage garb and custom fit it to your now... greater than vintage size.
I own a first edition copy of the first volume and love it. This is light years ahead. Glorious glossy coffee-table book with great patterns, all updated with modern yarns.
What a beautiful book!!! So many great patterns, so little time. Great quality photos. Looking forward to actually trying the patterns.
I really enjoy this book. I am a intermediate to advanced knitter and like to use vintage and antique patterns and have already gathered the materials needed to knit a sweater from this book--page 64. I also find that the vintage knitting patterns fit me better--I have a large bust, narrow shoulders, short arms and a small waist and am short waisted--most modern patterns are not made for someone like myself. I would really like to see a book of knitting/crochet patterns from the authors of this book that date from the 1960s and 1970s.
Vintage-style clothing is very fashionable today. If you're a knitter, as am I, you have been wanting to make a bolero, sweater, or accessory item inspired by the flattering feminine looks of the 1940s or 1950s. This is the book for you! There are so many ideas and projects your biggest hurdle will be settling on which will be your first. You will see each pattern as it originally appeared with pictures of the item recreated in modern yarns. The modernized patterns are clear and make use of modern time-saving techniques. So you really have the best of worlds. The purist may pursue it her own way, as may the modernist knitter.
I like the instant gratification of the large stitch knitting projects. But it's the garments made with fine gauge yarn that get the most use in my wardrobe.

Many of the garments in this book are worked over U.S. #3 needles using fingering weight yarns. Personal favorites include the Tyrolean Jumper Coat and the Blouse with Gathered Neckline. These vintage patterns have been reworked for modern sizing yet retain the look and construction of the original patterns. If you've ever seen beautiful fine gauge yarn on sale yet dreaded making another tedious sock, this book is for you.

The directions are clearly written and the photographs show the modern versions of the garments from multiple angles. The original directions and models are also shown in a reduced-size format. Yes, it's an expensive book. But it has many more patterns than the average knitting book, and honestly has a better variety than the first volume. I hesitated when I saw the purchase price but I'm glad I bought it.
